Ever since it was confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will be leaving Renault for McLaren at the end of 2020, retired F1 driver Fernando Alonso has been mentioned among many in F1 as one of the top guys who should replace Ricciardo. However, some F1 experts feels that Alonso, and for that matter, other older drivers should make way for young talent instead

Fernando Alonso won both his championships while driving for Renault early on in his career but he failed to add to the tally after that and eventually retired from F1 citing a lack of motivation

Former F1 driver Mark Webber has explained why he thinks Alonso won’t be returning to F1

"I'd be surprised at his return. We know that Fernando is very good and that he has had an incredible career. But we also know that he is no longer at his best level. It will be difficult to do the same as in the past"

He further elaborated on how Alonso would find it difficult to stay motivated if he were to return

"If he's gonna sign a long-term contract, I'm not saying he can't. However, I think it will be difficult for him to keep the motivation to drive for two to three years"

He then gave his thoughts on the only scenario that would work for Alonso if he were to come out of retirement

"Still he is on the level to be good for the team and someone who can motivate a team. It is important that he performs. He left Formula 1 because of the lack of motivation, because he couldn't fight for podiums"

Meanwhile, another former F1 driver Giedo van der Garde expanded on Webber’s thoughts

"If I were Fernando, I wouldn't want it either. He will be coming back to Renault for the third time. Let him keep himself busy with IndyCar and the Dakar and give young talent a chance in F1"

He then concluded by suggesting that younger talent needs to be given a chance and explained why the old-timers need to make way for them

"Not those old guys anymore. Kimi Raikkonen also has to quit and Fernando doesn't have to come back at all. The same goes for a return from Hülkenberg. You can also say: ‘He has had his time. Now give a young talent a chance.’”

Do Current Drivers Have It Too Easy?

F1 has become a lot safer than it was in the past and former F1 world champion Nigel Mansell has looked at how the current era is different

“Then so many brilliant drivers had a simple accident and broke their legs or arms, or whatever and couldn’t continue their careers. Now good drivers make heinous mistakes and don’t get injured. They barely sweat in the car. At the end of the race, it’s as if they have just come out of a hair salon”

He then had some praise for reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton

“As for Lewis, what an opportunity he has been given from a very early age. Like Michael Schumacher he has had the incredible support from manufacturers to demonstrate his abilities. He won his first World Championship with McLaren and then went straight to a team where he won another five”

He then revealed his pick for the greatest ever while explaining his choice

“I always say Fangio because those who drove in that era — and I think Lewis would agree — were the true heroes because if you had an accident it was 50-50 whether you were thrown free or died”
