2023 Mercedes S63 – INTERIOR / AMG S63 (E Performance) – Mercedes S Class 2023 / Luxury Sports Sedan

The new plug-in hybrid, 2023 Mercedes-AMG, S63 E Performance retains its twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V-8 engine, while adding a permanently excited synchronous electric motor to produce a whopping 791 hp and 1,055 pound-feet of torque.

All of that power propels the massive sedan to, 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 180 mph. The V-8 engine produces 603 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, when driven by a nine-speed automatic transmission. The hot-V configuration, which places the turbochargers between the cylinder banks, is said to improve responsiveness. The V-8 also has a belt-driven starter-generator built into the 400-volt electrical system.

Meanwhile, the electric motor is mounted on the rear axle, and is mated to a two-speed transmission as well as an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential. When the e-motor reaches its maximum speed of 13 thousand 500 RPM, the second gear engages around 87 mph, dropping the motor back to a low rpm where it makes its peak torque. The electric motor can produce 188 hp for up to 10 seconds, or 94 hp continuously. While the gas and electric powertrains use separate transmissions, the all-wheel-drive system, allows the power from the e-motor to be sent to the front wheels as well, allowing the S63 to operate as an all-wheel-drive EV.

The battery pack is located above the rear axle and has a capacity of 13.1 Kilowatt hours, providing a driving range of approximately 20 miles. According to Mercedes, placing the motor and battery on the rear axle, improves weight distribution and handling.

The S63 has four regeneration levels: the lowest allows for coasting, while the highest allows for one-pedal driving, and can return up to 90 kW back to the battery. A 3.7-kW onboard AC charger handles battery charging, but Mercedes did not provide a recharging time estimate.

The new S63 has seven drive modes. In Electric mode, the car starts silently (though a "AMG characteristic" start-up sound plays on the interior speakers), and the S63 only uses electric power up to 87 mph. The AMG also emits a low-frequency sound through its exterior loudspeakers, at speeds of up to 19 mph to warn pedestrians of the presence of the luxo-barge. When the battery charge is depleted, the car will enter Comfort mode, which balances the two propulsion systems for smooth driving. A Battery Hold setting preserves the remaining charge, whereas Sport and Sport+ prioritize the e-power motor's for thrilling driving. A Slippery setting flattens the torque curve and prevents electric-only driving, while Individual lets the driver customize the setup.

The AMG Ride Control+ suspension system, which includes air springs and adaptive dampers, transforms the S63 from a sedate cruiser to a sports sedan, depending on the drive mode. When you exceed 75 mph, the S63 lowers by 0.4 inch, and it has active roll stabilization, thanks to electro-mechanically controlled anti-roll bars, that can be divided in half, to handle different road imperfections on either side of the car. The S63's standard rear-wheel steering, makes it more maneuverable in tight quarters, and more stable during high-speed cornering.

The S63 looks similar to a standard S-class, but it has a new grille with vertical slats and a front bumper, with larger air intakes. The S63 rides on 21-inch wheels, with four trapezoidal tailpipes wedged between a diffuser. The cabin is rich and luxurious for an S-class, with AMG upholstery, stitching, seats, and steering wheel. AMG and hybrid displays are also added to the infotainment system.
