2 killed, 10 injured : Car races in the pedestrian zone, Germany.

At least two people are dead and 10 hurt after a car ploughed into them in a pedestrian zone in a German city.

The driver of the car has been arrested, said police in the city of Trier as the force urged people to stay away from the area.

The local police force and mayor confirmed two people were killed.

Police have not stated if it is being treated as a terrorist incident.

Public broadcaster SWR reported that the driver had been detained by police, adding that details of the incident were unclear.

A police spokesperson tweeted: "We arrested one person and seized a vehicle.

A witness told local paper Trierische Volksfreund that a dark gray Ranger Rover had driven at high speed into crowds, with people 'flying into the air'.

Officers warned people to avoid the scene, and said they are on the scene alongside ambulance crews.

"According to initial investigations, two people have died.

"Please continue to avoid the city centre."
